Round Midnight

M1/M6 junction

shriek of orange
panicky wrench at the steering column
nanoseconds ahead of the fork

counties shaking apart under the wheels
wondering where my head has been for the last 20 miles
and who has been doing the driving

thinking I might die tonight
leaving nothing that matters
not the tiny triumphs
the infinities of small defeats
and petty vengeances
the words we said and were

almost too drunk to remember
and far too lost to care

in the midnight hour
the twitching hour
(tonight’s the night
the gremlins have their picnic)

Birmingham flinging shadows across the central reservation
Sodium against my retina

and it’s nearer now
nearer the end
and the start too

the clown’s revenge
the prisoner’s dilemma

um mitternacht hab ich

hab ich…
