Charade

After The Fall
of the Final Curtain,
Cinderella fled for the last bus home.

Prince Charming, meanwhile,
reassumed his somewhat threadbare self-respect
and hunted one last, vain glass slipper,
but found only futility
measured in discarded raffle-tickets
littering the ballroom floor

All the love lost between them
pinned to the backdrop
by a single wan blue spotlight
in a theatre that reeked of formaldehyde.

Perhaps Time
the Wicked Witch of the West End
will take pity
and transform him
into an ugly
uncaring
toad: but

hope
is
a
hard
habit
to
break.
