it began
a mere insinuation
sired by Grudge
out of Thoughtlessness

callous, careless mischief
settled the rest

flashflood fleet
it rose from its native sewer
licking at feet
it seeped into hallways
swelled into the street

mud mired the landscape
the media mocked
cartoonists flourished
reputations rocked
and crumbled

“There’s no smoke without fire,”
we said
as insinuation
turned to incineration

but sometimes fire merely cremates
what smoke has already murdered
